The Webinar Series on Climate Change and Adaptation Strategies in Architecture organized within the framework of the 25th Anniversary Events of our university

The main theme of the webinar series prepared in celebration of the 25th anniversary of our university by the High-Performance Buildings Application and Research Center of our university is selected as Climate Change and Adaptation Strategies. In these webinar series aimed at addressing climate change, which affects regions around the world in different ways and mobilizes all countries and states to develop urgent action plans, with a focus on the building sector and the processes of acquiring structures, four distinguished experts with national and international recognition have been hosted.

February 10, 2022 – Prof. Dr. Pieter De WILDE

Seminar The title of the webinar featuring Prof. Dr. Pieter De Wilde from the Department of Architecture at Strachclyde University is determined as “Climate Change Adaptation – Performance Simulation of Future Buildings.” In his presentation, Prof. Dr. De Wilde provided information on the use of building performance simulation to examine the adaptation of buildings to climate change. The speech began by explaining the urgency and complexity of the problem, introducing the general challenges of adapting to climate change. In particular, the difference between mitigating and adapting to climate change was revealed and emphasized. Subsequently, based on previous research by Prof. Dr. De Wilde and his team, some approaches to simulation studies on climate change adaptation were presented.

March 3, 2022 – Prof. Dr. Levent KURNAZ Seminar

Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz, the Director of the Center for Climate Change and Policies Implementation and Research at Boğaziçi University, answered the most curious questions about climate change in the webinar where he participated as a speaker. Prof. Kurnaz first explained what climate change is and summarized the current situation we are in today. He emphasized that each country needs to combat the emerging problem in its own specific situation and explained possible adaptation strategies. He interpreted international agreements and the latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Along with our individual and societal responsibilities, he provided extensive information on energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities from the perspective of the building sector.

May 12, 2022 – Prof. Dr. Susan ROAF Seminar

Prof. Dr. Susan Roaf, an Honorary Professor at Heriot Watt University with 22 books on solar energy and sustainable design, thermal comfort, and climate change adaptation, gave a speech about the relationship between comfort, adaptation, and climate change. Prof. Roaf, illustrating climate change with striking examples, emphasized that the most important criterion in building design today is designs that are suitable and harmonious with users’ comfort perceptions. She pointed out that local and regional comfort perceptions are highly variable and that universal assumptions and standards in this regard are no longer applicable. She emphasized the importance of considering climate-responsive local architectural components.

June 9, 2022 – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Linda TOLEDO Seminar

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Linda Toledo from Strachclyde University, a speaker at the event, is a designer and researcher with experience in sustainability and environmental architecture. With architectural practice in Italy and Belgium, and expertise in sustainability programs, sustainable urban transformation research, and sustainable housing, Dr. Toledo focused on energy-efficient homes, risks of overheating, and indoor air quality monitoring. She provided information on the problems caused by overheating in energy-efficient homes and the effects of climate change. She emphasized that overly insulated buildings for heat preservation today may create other problems in the future and discussed what needs to be considered for user comfort.

February 5, 2021 – WEBINAR: High Performance Buildings: Towards a New and Better Built Environment for Turkey

The seminar “High Performance Buildings: Towards a New and Better Built Environment for Turkey”, supported by the British Council-Newton Fund “Research Environments Link” program and jointly conducted by Plymouth University in the UK and our University’s Department of Architecture, took place on February 5, 2021, at 14:00 in an online environment. The seminar was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülsu Ulukavak Harputlugil from the Faculty of Architecture at Çankaya University. The opening speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ali Türel, the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, and followed by a presentation titled

Professor of Built Environments at the University of Plymouth. Dr. Pieter de Wilde “High Performance Buildings – Overview”,
